The James Island/Folly Beach Democrats organization has committed to adopting a two-mile stretch of Folly Rd. between South Grimball Rd. and Sol Legare. Marlo Shedlock from the Adopt-a-Highway organization was on hand to explain that we will be responsible for cleaning that stretch of road five times a year for two years. The Adopt-a-Highway organization will provide orange vests, gloves, bags and sticks. Once we have completed our first cleanup and submitted a report, Adopt-a-Highway will post two signs in visible locations along that stretch of Folly indicating that JIFB Dems have adopted it. We will provide our first clean-up date and time by the May meeting.

Conversations are under way with Bowen’s Island Restaurant about having one of our monthly meetings there. More information to come.

There was more discussion around other ideas for community engagement.

We’ve begun conversations with James Island Outreach. They are interested in partnering with our organization and we are looking for ways we can help them help the residents of James Island.

We also were reminded that there are five blessing boxes on James Island where residents can leave non-perishable items for our neighbors who are in need. We’ll provide exact locations soon.

Several representatives of the Sol Legare Island Community Center were at the meeting. We lerned that work is currently underway to renovate the center. At our next meeting we plan to discuss ways we might be able to help.

As James Island/Folly Beach Democrats continue to expand its reach throughout the area, we hope you will be thinking about ways you might become involved. New people and fresh ideas are always welcome!
